The "hybrid" running shoe category is having a massive moment. Whether you call them road-to-trail, gravel shoes, or multi-terrain hybrids, these are the versatile workhorses designed to handle the 4 miles of asphalt it takes to get to your favourite 6-mile forest loop.
Today, we’re pitting two of the heavyweights against each other: the brand-new Merrell ProMorph and the updated HOKA Challenger ATR 8. One is a nimble, ground-connected speedster; the other is a plush, rockered cruiser.
Let’s see which one deserves a spot in your rotation.

Merrell ProMorph: The Responsive Shape-Shifter
The ProMorph is Merrell’s answer to the modern "gravel" runner. It leans heavily into Merrell’s trail DNA but strips away the clunky hiking boot feel for a sleek, athletic ride.
Key Features:
FloatPro+ Midsole: This supercritical foam is the star. It’s firmer and more energetic than standard EVA, providing a "pop" that makes it easy to pick up the pace on the road.
FLEXconnect® Grooves: These dual-directional grooves in the midsole allow the shoe to flex naturally with your foot, providing a much better connection to the ground than most hybrids.
Vibram® XS Trek Evo Outsole: While the lugs are shallow (2.2mm), the rubber compound is premium. It offers exceptional grip on wet pavement and rocky paths alike.
Built-in Stability: High midsole "walls" cradle the foot, making this feel surprisingly stable on uneven terrain without needing a heavy medial post.
HOKA Challenger ATR 8: The Plush 4x4
Often called "The Trail Clifton," the Challenger 8 has undergone a significant overhaul for 2026. It has leaned even further into HOKA’s maximalist roots, increasing the stack height to provide a cloud-like experience.
Key Features:
Max Cushioning: With a heel stack of 42mm, this shoe is all about impact protection. The new EVA foam is noticeably softer than the ATR 7, absorbing vibration from the hardest tarmac.
Aggressive Meta-Rocker: HOKA’s signature geometry has been updated to be even more pronounced. It creates a smooth, rolling transition that feels effortless during long, steady-state runs.
Gravel-Inspired Lugs: The 4mm lugs are inspired by gravel bike tires—closely spaced in the centre for road efficiency and more aggressive on the edges for cornering on dirt.
Improved Fit: The ATR 8 has moved away from the narrow midfoot of previous versions, offering a more accommodating forefoot and a comfortable heel pull tab.
Key Differences
1. Ride Feel: "Pop" vs. "Roll"
The Merrell ProMorph feels like a traditional running shoe on steroids. You feel the ground, you get energy back from the foam, and you feel nimble. The HOKA Challenger 8 feels like a rolling lounge chair. It’s plush, protective, and less about "feeling" the trail and more about "floating" over it.
2. Technical Capability
Because of the Vibram outsole, the Merrell handles wet rock and slick surfaces slightly better. However, the HOKA's 4mm lugs are significantly deeper than Merrell’s 2.2mm, giving the HOKA the edge on loose gravel or very light mud.
3. Stability and Ground Feel
The Merrell ProMorph sits lower to the ground and uses FLEXconnect to let your foot move naturally. If you’re worried about rolling an ankle on a rooty trail, the ProMorph feels safer. The HOKA is stable due to its wide base, but the high stack height can feel a bit "disconnected" on technical sections.
Which Shoe is Best for You?
Buy the Merrell ProMorph if...
You want a "one-shoe quiver" that can handle a road 10K just as easily as a light trail race. It’s perfect for runners who prefer a firmer, more responsive ride and value stability and ground feel over pure softness.
Buy the HOKA Challenger ATR 8 if...
You want comfort above all else. If your "trails" are mostly groomed park paths and you spend 60% of your time on the road, the Challenger 8 is the gold standard for joint protection. It’s the ultimate recovery or long-distance hybrid.
